[쉬어가기] 청사그룹 박사원 "2화 영어 해설 & 표현 정리"

 

여러분 청사그룹 박사원을 사랑해주셔서 감사합니다. 7화까지 달리고 있는 요즘 어떠신가요? 오늘은 8화 대신, 2화에서 나왔던 영어 구문 해설과 표현들을 정리해봤습니다. 아직 풀어나갈 이야기는 많지만, 아직 글재주는 부족한가 봅니다. 그래서 수업으로 돌아왔습니다.

2화 영어 해설

1. "Can you tell us about yourself in English?"

소개 요청을 할 때,  "Can you introduce yourself?" 라는 표현이 익숙 할수도 있지만 직설적이고 부자연스러워 실생활에선 'tell me about yourself'를 더 사용합니다. 더 자연스럽고 일반적인 표현이며 면접에 더 자주 쓰입니다.  

2. "Introduce" vs "Tell"?

"Introduce"는 자동사가 아니어서 about을 쓰지 않습니다. 

3. 자동사

목적어(~을, 를) 없이 단독으로 쓰일 수 있는 동사입니다. 위의 "Introduce"는 이미 "~에 소개하다"로 해석되어 "about"이 필요 없습니다. 비슷한 단어로 discuss, mention, explain, describe등이 있습니다. 

4. "Back in ~" - 과거에 특정한 장소에서 지냈던 시간을 이야기할 때 사용합니다.  

• Back in Sydney, I was a shop owner. (시드니에 있던 시절, 나는 가게 주인이었어.)
• Back in New York, I used to work for your brother. (뉴욕에 있던 시절, 나는 너의 오빠 밑에서 일한적이 있어.)

5. "Move on to ~" - (다음 단계로) 넘어가다. 

 정중하게 쓸 때는 아래와 같습니다. 

• "Shall we proceed to the next question?" → 더 격식 있는 표현.
• "Let's continue with the next question." → 자연스럽게 이어가는 표현.

6. "Move와 Move on의 차이?"

• '(단순한) 이동하다'와 '(다음 단계로) 넘어가다'의 차이입니다.
• 물리적인 이동과 상황이나 단계 전환의 차이라고 보시면 됩니다.

TOEIC SPEAKING - 그림 묘사하기

 입사 전 보유하면 좋은 자격증인 토익 스피킹에 대비하기 위한 문제 연습을 웹소설에서 나온 그림을 활용하여 설명하고자 합니다. 사실 신입이 아니라면 경력직은 그다지 필요없는 자격증일 수 있습니다. 회사 별로 규모가 크다면 자체 영어 테스트 사이트를 연계시켜 지원자들에게 미리 시험을 보게 시킵니다. 혹은 영어를 구사하는 인력이 있다면 면접관으로 들어가 지원자들의 영어 면접을 진행 및 주도합니다. 

그래도 내 영어 실력을 입증할 자료가 하나쯤은 있다면 면접이 조금은 더 수월하겠지요? 

레벨에 따른 묘사입니다. 우선 아래 그림을 보고 묘사를 해본 후, 아래 레벨에 맞춰서 다시 연습해 봅시다.

레벨 3

This is a big building. It has many windows. The color is blue. There are trees and cars. The building looks new.

좋은 시작입니다. 아쉽지만 큰 점수는 받기 어려운 정도의 짧은 묘사였습니다. 단순히 머릿속에 떠오른 것을 구어체로 말한 수준입니다. 보통 대부분의 지원자들이 여기 수준에 머물러 있습니다. 레벨을 끌어 올리려면 묘사를 하는데 필요한 다양한 패턴을 익힐 필요가 있습니다. 우선 사진 전체를 설명하고 그 중에서 메인이 될만한 대상을 설명한 뒤 점차 자세히 묘사를 하는 방식입니다. 즉, 큰 것부터 설명 한 후에 작은 것으로 설명을 들어가는 방식으로 정한 후 그에 맞는 패턴을 공부하여 봅시다.

레벨 5~6

This is a modern office building with a glass exterior. It has several floors and large windows that reflect the sky. The entrance has large glass doors, making it look professional and clean.

There are some trees and greenery around the building, which makes the place feel more welcoming. In front of the building, there is a sign that says ‘경인공업 신입사원 채용,’ which means 'Gyeongin Industrial is hiring new employees.'

The street in front of the building is clean and well-organized. There are a few cars and streetlights, making the area look neat. Overall, the building looks like a professional and well-maintained office.

좋습니다. 레벨 3보다 문장이 훨씬 길어졌고, 더 구체적인 묘사가 들어갔습니다. 이제 단순한 단어의 나열이 아니라 구조적으로 묘사하는 능력을 보여주고 있습니다. 

• big building대신 modern office building with a glass exterior라고 더 구체적으로 건물의 재질과 특성을 표현했습니다.  
• large windown that reflects the sky와 같이 유리창이 단순히 크다는 것이 아닌 하늘을 반사한다는 시각적 특정도 표현했습니다. 
• clean and welcoming이라는 표현을 써서 건물이 주는 인상도 설명했습니다. 
• streetlights, well-maintained 가로등이나 잘 정돈된 거리의 추가정보를 넣어서 더 풍부하게 묘사를 한 문장입니다. 

아주 좋은 방식의 묘사이고 충분히 레벨 5 이상의 점수를 획득 할 수 있습니다.

레벨 7 

As you can see, this is a modern office building featuring a sleek glass facade that beautifully reflects the sky. The structure has multiple floors, and the entrance is marked by large glass doors that create a professional and inviting impression.

Surrounding the building, there are well-maintained trees and patches of greenery, which add to its clean and welcoming atmosphere. A recruitment banner in front of the building indicates that 'Gyeongin Industrial' is currently hiring new employees.

Additionally, the surrounding streets are well-organized, with a few vehicles passing by and modern streetlights lining the sidewalks. The overall appearance suggests that this is a professional and well-established company located in a thriving business district.

굉장히 어려운 수준의 묘사였습니다. 자연스럽고 고급 어휘를 많이 사용했으며, 막힘이 없다면 7은 무난하게 받을 수준의 묘사입니다. 레벨 5~6보다 더 유창하고 자연스러운 표현을 사용했습니다. 단순히 높은 정보를 위한 정보 전달에서 벗어나 문장 간 연결이 매끄럽고, 다양한 어휘와 구조를 활용하는 능력을 보여줬습니다.  

There are trees around the building. 대신 The building is surrounded by lush greenery, enhancing its inviting atmosphere.라는 표현은 분사구문이나 관계대명사를 활용한 더 자연스러운 문장이 되었습니다. 레벨 5~6과 가장 큰 차이는 눈에 보이는 것들만 묘사한 것과 그 장소가 주는 인상까지 묘사를 한 점입니다. 

The overall appearance suggests that this is a professional and well-established company located in a thriving business district. 라는 이 문장이 레벨 7를 받을 수 있게 판가름 지은 킬러 문장이라 볼 수 있습니다.  사실을 넘어 분석적인 해석을 담았기 때문입니다.
